PREVENTIVE EATING
Did you know that eating a diet that is rich in organic veggies and low in processed, fried, and sugary food is a great way for helping stay healthy and for getting over the flu fast if you do get it?

A body besieged with toxins has a harder time fighting off viruses and bacteria because it is too busy processing the toxins and cannot support the Immune System, the Circulatory System, and the elimination processes in their fight to rid the body of pathogens.

Raw garlic is one of the most important flu preventatives.  Try some crushed garlic with a spoonful of honey, which is a raw natural antipbiotic.  Turmeric, Cayenne, Ginger, Sage, Thyme, and Oregano are spices and herbs that can help prevent the fllu.  It is great to incorporate these into your cooking.  You might also choose to consider adding more of the following foods into your diet (if you do not already do so)...

Local organic vegetables
Local GMO-free meat and eggs
Organic grains (brown rice, quinoa)
Organic fruit and veggies
Miso

You can try unpasteurized fermented foods; which are high in Vitamin C, are very cleansing, and have a beneficial effect on the digestive system.

FOODS TO AVOID!
Sugar
feeds bacteria and viruses.  The process of making bread or beer is a great example of this; sugar feeds the bacteria and it multiplies.  The same thing happens in our bodies.
Coffee dehydrates the body and depletes it of vitamins and minerals, especially B vitamins that help support the immune system. If you are a coffee drinker you might want to limit your daily consumption to one or two cups, ot switch to tea.
Alcohol clogs up the liver and can inhibit the immune system.  It also turns into sugar which feeds bacteria and viruses.
Processed Foods - with preservatives, food coloring, and partially hydrogenated fats - keep our bodies at an overworked state.  The liver and other organs become stressed and literally clog up.

THE STRESS/ILLNESS
CONNECTION
The effects of stress on immune system functioning and overall level of wellness have been studied and well-documented.  Chronic stress can raise cortisol levels and weaken our immune system, making us more susceptible to colds and the flu, as well as more serious health problems.

Nutrition, exercise, sleep, and attitude all have an impact on our stress levels.

ADAPTOGENIC HERBS can help reduce stress.  You might pick one of these to work with:
Astragulus Tea, Tincture or Capsules (childsafe)
Siberian Ginseng Tincture
Holy Basil Tea (childsafe)

NERVINES help nourish our nervous system and can help deal with daily stress.  You can inquire about these with a naturopathic physician or at Farmacy Herbs in Providence, The Herb Wyfe in Wickford, or Seven Arrows Farm in Attleboro.

THE BENEFITS OF TEAS
AND HERBS
IN COMBATTING THE FLU

TEAS
can help address many of our body's requirements.  The Farmacy Herbs prevention protocol is to pick one or two herbs, usually prepared as tea, selecting an herb to address each different requirement: adaptogen (mentioned in article to the right), anti-bacterial/aromatic, tonic, nervine, detoxifying, and immune.  All the herbs listed directly below are sale for children.

Anti-bacterial/aromatic herbs are great for a sore throat.  Breathing in steam from a hot cup of tea made with sage, oregano, thyme or ginger, will clear clogged sinuses.

Tonics are high in vitamins and mineras and give our bodies a boost of nourishment - nettles tea, alfalfa tea, confrey tea.

Nervines
nourish the nervous system - oatstraw tea, lemon balm tea, chamomile tea.

Immune herbs help build the body's resistance - echinacea tincture, licorice tincture or tea, astragulus tea, tincture or capsule. (Do not take Echinacea for more than one week at a time.)

Supplements are also important to include in your regimen: Colloidal Silver is a strong natural anti-biotic. Zinc, Vitamin C and Vitamin D are also essential.  Get your sunlight!  In studies at Oregon State University, Vitamin D proved to e a strong immune system modulator.  For individual recommended doses check out: http://ods.od.nih.gov/index.aspx.

1/2 gallon water
5 cups Vodka
30 drops Tea Tree oil
30 drops Lavender essential oil

FLU TREATMENT

There is no cure-all herb or food for the flu.  Carefully-selected herbs and foods help our bodies deal with the pathogens in our system.  they support our circulatory system, elimination system, the liver, kidneys and more...

Febrifuge herbs may help induce sweating; anodynes are used to relieve pain; demulcents sooth musuc membranes, expectorants help clear mucus, and suppressant herbs like Wild Cherry Bark Syrup help to quiet coughing. Some of these will also help with sleep.  It is best to consult with a naturopathic physician and herbalist on these matters.
